Our History

The information contained in this section has been prepared by Bruce Stirling who in 2006 was commissioned by the Ruapuha Uekaha Hapu Trust to compile a report on the ‘taking’ of the Caves through to the settlement of the Wai 51 Claim where the Crown acknowledged the longstanding grievances of Ruapuha and Uekaha and returned the Caves to the descendants of the original owners for the benefit of future generations.

Consequently, a condensed history has been provided giving whanau the opportunity to read the ‘story’ behind the nationally and internationally renowned Waitomo Glowworm Caves. The report is set out in chronological order with source documents duly recorded for the purposes of authenticity and accuracy.

In places the report has been abridged for the convenience of the reader.
